Maria Forsberg, Stockholm/Uppsala: "Painting as Multiple Art: A Reply to Thomasson"
According to the standard view, any work in painting can only have the original as an instance. On this view, no painting which looks exactly like the original is an instance of the work unless it actually is the original.
Can any work in painting have other instances than the original if our dispositions to say certain things show that we believe otherwise? Currie claims that this is indeed the case. Thomasson has long claimed that this is not the case. She gives an argument from meaning for her claim.
I show that the premises of the argument do not support her claim. I also describe a case where it is plausible to think that any painting which looks exactly like the original is an instance of the work, given that the premises are true – even if our dispositions show that we believe that any work in painting can only have the original as an instance.
