Sten Hagberg, Institutionen för kulturantropologi och etnologi, Uppsala universitet: "Security from below in Burkina Faso - Anthropological Research on Citizen Perceptions and Perspectives on (in)securities"
This paper presents the findings from a commissioned anthropological research programme focusing on security seen and experienced from below in Burkina Faso. The purpose was to contribute to a better understanding of citizens’ perceptions and perspectives on security and safety challenges. Fieldwork was conducted in 13 municipalities across the country in a truly collective methodological endeavor. In the paper, I will first contextualize the research programme and then describe its conceptual and methodological tenets, as well as, its practical implementation. Finally, I will present some findings, particularly by focusing on the process by which we analyzed the fieldwork material. The comparative approach was key, given that the research was expected to offer an in-depth understanding of (in)securitization processes currently at work in Burkinabe municipalities.
