Seminarium: Ultra-dense matter inside neutron stars

Quantitative understanding of the interiors of neutron stars is one of 
the biggest goals of contemporary nuclear physics. One way to study the 
interiors and the equation of state (EoS) of the cold ultra-dense plasma 
therein is to take advantage of different kinds of astrophysical 
measurements of neutron stars. For example, by measuring the size and 
compactness of neutron stars, we can try and reconstruct a EoS that can 
reproduce observations. A major drawback is that often we do not fully 
understand the astrophysical phenomena powering these observations. One 
of such a phenomena is the so-called X-ray bursts that are powerful 
thermonuclear runaways exploding beneath the surface of the neutron 
stars. In my talk, I will discuss our ongoing efforts to understand the 
physics of the accretion powering these bursts, how to model the 
emergent radiation from these explosive phenomena, and, ultimately, how 
to couple this understanding back to the study of the cold ultra-dense 
matter.
