Paul Russell, Lund University: "Free Will and the Tragic Predicament: Reflections on Williams"
The aim of this paper is to make better sense of free will and moral responsibility by way of making sense of Bernard Williams’ views on this subject. Williams is often presented as a “negative” thinker and his critique of “the morality system” (and his associated neo-Nietzschean program) may encourage the view that Williams was a sceptic about moral responsibility. I argue that the truth is the opposite of this. Williams’ fundamental objective is to discredit scepticism about moral responsibility and to show that it is rooted in the faulty assumptions and aspirations of “morality”.
