Abstract: This talk explores the historical legacies of colonialism to contemporary forms of reproductive labour in India. Practices such as surrogacy and sex work are connected to regulations of interracial cohabitations between native women and European men (ranging from domestic and sexual services to the birthing and raising of their mixed-race offspring) during the indirect rule through the East India Company (circa 1700-1857).
By using a coloniality of power framework (Quijano) we highlight how historical configurations of gender, race, caste and class have reconfigured in the present.
