Does the hormone leptin play a role in the reproductive physiology of zebrafish?


Reproduction is an energetically costly event across vertebrates. Therefore the initiation of sexual maturation, as well as a normal adult reproductive function, are tightly linked to the nutritional status and the amount of stored energy reserves. Reproduction in fish, as in other vertebrates, is coordinated by the brain – pituitary - gonad (BPG) axis, also known as reproductive axis. During juvenile development the reproductive endocrine axis is quiescent and it is first activated at the onset of puberty, when the organism acquires the capacity to reproduce for the first time. However, little is known so far how information of growth rates, nutritional status and the size of energy stores is conveyed to the reproductive centers in the BPG axis of fishes. In mammals, the hormone leptin plays a key role in energy homeostasis and body weight regulation, as well as puberty and reproduction. However, the role of leptin in fish is still less clear and questioned. My PhD focuses on the possible role of leptin both in the initiation of puberty and in a normal adult reproductive function in zebrafish (Danio rerio), using a leptin – receptor deficient zebrafish strain.
