Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Polymyxins against Gram-negative Superbugs
Wayne Lin did his PhD with Jian Li and others at Universities of Monash and Sydney. He thereafter worked as a research fellow at Monash and just started a fellowship with Certara in Melbourne.
Lung infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) ‘superbugs’ such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae are recognized as a significant global health challenge. Management of these MDR ‘superbugs’ with effective new antibiotics is not possible, as no new antimicrobial agents will be clinically available in the near future. Due to the emergence of MDR Gram-negative bacteria and a scarcity of new effective antibiotics, polymyxins, a class of old antibiotics, have undergone clinical resurgence as a last-resort for the treatment of life-threatening lung infections caused by MDR ‘superbugs. During this presentation, the potential roles of inhaled polymyxins in treating life-threatening lung infections will be discussed as well as Dr Wayne Li's most recent work on polymyxin-based triple combination to target XDR K. pneumoniae. Lastly, the next-generation antipseudomonal therapy against PDR P. aeruginosa will be presented.
