In this Tur Ethics Seminar, led by Malin B. Johansson and Nessima Salhi, we will get acquainted with the intervention of the philosopher Jacques Rancière about equality and discuss its potential relevance for education.
In his book “The Ignorant Schoolmaster – Five lessons in intellectual emancipation” Rancière describes the intellectual adventure of Maître Jacotot, through whom he asserts that in education intellectual equality should be a presupposition, not a goal. While our specific intellectual skills may differ from one another, we are all equally capable of using those skills to communicate, to discuss, and to make decisions. That is, everyone should appreciate their own intellectual capability and decide how to use it.
From a didactic point of view, the teacher does not liberate others by passing knowledge, but rather by passing awareness of what is possible when we see ourselves as free and intellectually equal individuals. Rancière is not interested in the proof of the presupposition of equal intelligence but in seeing what can be done under that supposition. “The Ignorant Schoolmaster” recounts the story of Joseph Jacotot, a nineteenth-century French educator who, through a bilingual translation of Fénelon’s Télémaque, successfully taught French to Flemish-speaking students despite his ignorance of the Flemish language. From this pedagogical experiment, Jacotot reasoned that subject mastery and intellectual hierarchy were unnecessary for successful education; teachers could teach what they didn’t know if they directed the student’s will to learn and to do and verified that the student paid attention during the activity of doing.

Welcome to TUR Ethics Seminar! The purpose of this seminar series is to inspire, provide knowledge, and develop the skills of teachers and pedagogical leaders interested in strengthening the ethical aspects of education within the Faculty of Science and Technology. We welcome both those who are experts in ethics in science and technology, those who have some experience, and those who would like to get introduced to the topic. We discuss issues such as why and how ethics can be introduced in our education. We discuss experience in ethics training that is already being conducted at the Faculty as well as at other institutions.
