Dr. Renee Timmers, The University of Sheffield, UK: "Expression in music performance: Concepts among students and teachers, embodied communication, and educational development"

Presentation
Playing with expression is one of the central aims of an engaged musical performance. Teachers and students may agree about that - but do they share the same understanding of what ‘an expressive performance’ entails? For example, what is the relationship between emotion and expression, and what is the role of the body in expressive communication? Dr. Renee Timmers - director of the ‘Music, Mind, Machine’ centre in Sheffield, and president of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music - will present three empirical studies that have looked at these questions from different perspectives: a questionnaire study investigating concepts of students and teachers, an empirical study investigating communication of different timbre intentions in piano performance, and an action research project exploring the application of dialogic teaching to enhance expressive performance in instrumental education. The results highlight the multimodality or hybridity of expression that couples movement with sonic and metaphorical intentions. They further provide insight into the diversity of concepts of expression and the creative potential that a focus on expression offers for instrumental teaching situations.
