SNAT10 as a novel regulator for nutrient sensing pathways in neurons
Sodium dependent Neutral Amino acid Transporter (SNAT) 10 is a glutamine transporter from the SNAT family, where other members are implicated in regulation of GABA and Glutamate levels in the brain through the glutamate-glutamine cycle. SNAT10, however, appears to have a function distinct from the other members of the SNAT family as it functions as a transceptor. It has a probable role in mediating the energy status to the cells to adjust metabolism accordingly, and we have evidence that it signals through the mTOR and AKT pathways. We have used transgenic mice and cell culture models to elucidate how SNAT10 ties into these pathways and the biochemical consequences of removal of SNAT10.
