Recent political upheavals in Kyrgyzstan have led to dramatic shifts in power and policy, bringing new actors to the fore, with heightened populism around policies, nationalism, ethnicity, and political coalitions. Although the new President, Sadyr Japarov, has gained strong popular support, it is still far from clear what his government will mean for Kyrgyzstan’s diverse society, human rights, political and personal freedoms, and social movements. This roundtable will feature short presentations about Japarov’s movement and its supporters and challengers, from three scholars of Kyrgyzstani politics and society, followed by discussion among the participants and with the audience.
