Imagining Future Sustainability

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and disposal of atomic waste are imaginations of future sustainability. Both deal with a deep anxiety of the present that is put to rest by technology in the future. All imaginations of the future and of sustainability needs time as an ingredient. Time bakes future and sustainability together as “future sustainability”: a perfect end state where complications of the present are resolved.  This seminar presentation approaches CCS and disposal of atomic waste from four dimensions of time: bio-chronological [circadian rhythms], sociocultural [anthropological], politicoeconomic [governmentality] and technocratic [technological].

The presentation explores the question of whether the choice to use certain dimensions of time as opposed to others is a matter of judgement pre-shaped by a technocratic mindset that infuses our daily life as a ‘cultural fact’. A second question, connected to the first, is also explored of whether both future and sustainability can ever have a non-technological imagination. In conclusion, the presentation seeks to initiate, at a conceptual level, the possibility of a non-linear and dynamic imagination [as a process] as opposed to linear and static imagination [as an end state] of future and sustainability.
